Understanding Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that most often affects the center of the face, including the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin. Symptoms can include flushing, recurring redness, visible blood vessels, swelling, and acne-like bumps. Some people also have stinging or burning, or eye involvement called ocular rosacea.
The exact cause is not fully understood. Sun exposure, stress, spicy foods, alcohol, and certain skin care products are commonly associated with flare-ups.
Treatment Options
Rosacea cannot be cured, but a dermatologist can help manage it with a plan based on your symptoms and triggers. Treatment may include:
- Prescription medicines to help reduce redness and inflammation
- Laser or light treatment for visible blood vessels
- Skin care routines that account for sensitivity and avoid triggers
- Guidance for recognizing and managing factors that bring on flare-ups
Rosacea often involves more than one symptom, so treatment may address redness, bumps, visible blood vessels, sensitivity, or eye symptoms differently. Let your dermatologist know about any stinging, burning, swelling, or eye concerns.
