Skin Cancer & Mohs Surgery

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma often develops on sun-exposed skin and may appear as a sore, shiny bump, or pink, scaly growth.

Understanding Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer. It typically develops on areas that receive sun exposure, including the scalp, face, nose, ears, neck, chest, shoulders, and back.

It may appear as a sore that does not heal, a shiny or pearly bump, or a pink, scaly growth. Have a new, changing, or non-healing growth evaluated by a dermatologist.

Treatment Options

Treatment is often surgical. Options may include:

  • Electrodesiccation and curettage, which scrapes the skin cancer site and applies heat
  • Excision
  • Mohs surgery

In some cases, treatment may include cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen, topical medication, photodynamic therapy, radiation, or oral medication. The appropriate option depends on the diagnosis and the lesion being evaluated.
