CoolSculpting treatment
CoolSculpting® is a nonsurgical fat-reduction procedure that uses precisely controlled cooling to target fat cells beneath the skin. Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than surrounding tissue. During treatment, the targeted cells are crystallized, then die. The body naturally processes and eliminates those cells over the weeks and months that follow.
The treatment is intended for noticeable bulges of fat that resist diet and exercise. It is not a weight-loss treatment and is not a treatment for obesity. A consultation considers the areas of concern, medical history, and whether cooling treatment is appropriate. CoolSculpting may be considered by someone seeking a nonsurgical alternative to liposuction, but it is not a substitute for weight-loss surgery.
Treatment areas and candidacy
CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared for selected areas including the flanks, sometimes called love handles; abdomen; submental area beneath the chin; inner and outer thighs; and banana rolls beneath the buttocks. The right treatment area is one with a visible, pinchable fat bulge rather than generalized weight gain. A treatment plan is based on the body areas selected and the goals discussed during consultation.
People with cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria should not have this procedure. Discuss any health condition, prior treatment, or concern about cold exposure before proceeding. CoolSculpting is not appropriate for everyone, and rare effects can occur in addition to the more common temporary effects described below.
Planning sessions and results
There is no fixed number of sessions for every person. A visit may address one or more areas, and additional sessions may be considered when the plan calls for them. Session length changes with the number and location of areas being treated during one visit. Cost also varies with the areas selected, the number of sessions, and the individual treatment plan.
No supplements, pills, or special diet and exercise program are required by the procedure itself. Maintaining usual health habits remains separate from the procedure. If weight is gained later, weight may be gained across the body, including in treated areas.
Some changes may become noticeable about three weeks after treatment. More visible change may appear around two months, while the body can continue processing treated cells for four to six months. Once the treated cells have been processed and eliminated, they are gone. The timing and degree of visible change vary, and an additional session may be discussed when appropriate for the original treatment plan.
During the procedure
An applicator delivers cooling to the selected area. During the first few minutes, pressure and intense cold can occur and typically fade. Deep pulling, tugging, pinching, numbness, or discomfort may also be felt during treatment. People often use the treatment time to read, work on a laptop, watch a video, or rest.
Because the procedure is nonsurgical, people typically return to normal activities immediately afterward, including returning to work. There are no incisions or surgical recovery period described for this treatment. A clinician can explain what to expect for the chosen area and whether the timing of treatment fits upcoming activities.
Recovery and possible effects
Temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, and pain can occur after treatment. The treated area may feel sensitive while these effects resolve. Do not assume a symptom is expected if it is concerning, severe, or persistent. Contact the office for guidance about post-treatment symptoms or questions.
CoolSculpting uses cooling rather than surgery to target selected fat cells. It does not change the need to consider overall health, weight changes, or other options for body contouring. The consultation is the time to review the areas being considered, the expected number and timing of sessions, possible recovery effects, and whether the treatment matches the intended goal.
