Fractional Laser Resurfacing

Fractional laser resurfacing uses pinpoint channels of light to address texture, lines, scars, and uneven pigmentation.

Fractional laser resurfacing

Fractional laser resurfacing delivers light in a pattern of pinpoint channels rather than a solid beam. This treats targeted areas while leaving surrounding skin untreated. It may be considered for wrinkles, scars, blemishes, textural irregularities, hyperpigmentation, and melasma. An evaluation helps determine whether resurfacing is appropriate for the concern and area being treated.

Ablative and non-ablative options

Ablative lasers break the surface of the skin. The skin can be open and raw for several days, with healing that can take two to four weeks. Ablative resurfacing has been used for acne scars and deeper wrinkles.

Non-ablative fractional lasers work at varying depths with less extensive downtime. They create channels of treated skin and are commonly performed as a series. They may address fine lines, deeper wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and melasma. The recommended approach, number of treatments, and recovery time depend on the laser and the treatment goal.

Fractional laser options

  • Fraxel Re:store DUAL: Uses 1550 nm and 1927 nm wavelengths. It can stimulate deeper collagen and address fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and melasma. It is FDA-cleared to treat actinic keratosis, which are precancerous lesions.
  • Nordlys® Frax 1550/1940: Delivers small, controlled bursts of energy to the selected area. The heat stimulates the dermis and collagen production and can be used for textural irregularities and pigmentation.

Planning and recovery

Treatment planning accounts for the skin concern, treatment area, laser approach, and the time available for healing. A series may be recommended for non-ablative treatment. Discuss prior procedures, active skin concerns, and recovery expectations before treatment so the laser plan and timing can be selected appropriately.

Fractional resurfacing laser treatment is available in Chapel Hill and Cary. An evaluation can confirm current availability and identify the technology that fits the concern being addressed.
