IPL Photofacial

IPL uses pulses of broad-spectrum light to address selected pigment and vascular concerns with little to no downtime.

IPL photofacial treatment

Intense pulsed light, or IPL, is a noninvasive light treatment used for selected pigment and vascular concerns. It differs from laser treatment: a laser uses a concentrated beam, while IPL uses multiple wavelengths of light. IPL can be considered for concerns that involve visible pigment, superficial blood vessels, or uneven tone.

The light targets hemoglobin in superficial vessels, heating and coagulating unwanted vessels. It can also bring pigment toward the skin’s surface, where it may slough off naturally over time. Heat from treatment may stimulate collagen and elastin production, which can improve overall tone, complexion, and the appearance of skin elasticity.

Concerns IPL may address

IPL may be used for pigmented and vascular lesions, scars, sun-damaged skin, brown spots, rosacea-related redness and flushing, and small spider veins. Treatment planning depends on the type, location, and severity of the concern.

  • Pigmented and vascular lesions: Gradual improvement may occur over about three to five monthly treatments.
  • Sun-damaged skin and brown spots: IPL may improve the appearance of blotchy skin and brown spots that develop after years of sun exposure.
  • Rosacea: IPL may improve rosy or red skin, telangiectasias, cheek flushing, and pustular acne. It is not a cure for rosacea. It may be used with medical dermatology management, and a series of at least three treatments about four weeks apart may provide longer-lasting improvement.
  • Spider veins: IPL may reduce the appearance of small veins.

Sessions and treatment experience

Session length and the number of treatments vary by condition. Most people experience slight discomfort during IPL treatment and do not require topical anesthesia. Treatments for pigment and vascular concerns are planned as a series when indicated rather than as a single universal schedule.

An evaluation can determine whether IPL is suitable, the areas to treat, and how treatments should be spaced. Discuss current skin concerns and the expected timing of visible pigment changes before treatment. Pigment that reaches the surface fades as it sloughs off naturally over time, while vascular and tone changes may develop gradually over the recommended series.

IPL photofacial treatment is available in Chapel Hill and Cary. An evaluation can confirm current location availability and whether IPL fits the concern being addressed.
