Laser and Energy-Based Treatments

Laser and radiofrequency treatments can address selected concerns such as hair, superficial pigment, skin texture, and skin laxity.

Laser and energy-based treatments

Laser and energy-based treatments may be used for selected cosmetic skin concerns. The appropriate technology depends on the concern, skin characteristics, treatment area, and recovery considerations. Laser treatments use light energy. Thermage is not a laser: it uses radiofrequency energy. The distinction matters because the technologies work differently and are selected for different goals.

Candela GentleMax Pro laser treatments

The Candela GentleMax Pro is used for laser hair removal, laser skin rejuvenation, and removal of superficial pigment. Laser hair removal and laser skin rejuvenation are offered in Chapel Hill. Treatment planning considers the concern, area, and the type of result being sought.

Laser skin rejuvenation uses heat to stimulate collagen and elastin production. It is used to address fine lines, wrinkles, and pore size. Treatments are typically performed as a series. This treatment can be used year-round for skin types including sensitive, combination, acne-prone, and rosacea-prone skin, with no downtime described for the treatment.

Superficial pigment treatment

For superficial pigment, laser light selectively targets unwanted pigment in the skin. The pigment absorbs the light and heats up. It can then present at the skin’s surface and slough away through normal skin-cell turnover. Treatment is quick, with mild heat discomfort possible during the procedure. Up to three treatments may be recommended for noticeable improvement.

After treatment, skin can be slightly red or pink and sensitive, with a sensation similar to sunburn. Pigment can appear much darker or gray before it sheds. Do not scratch or remove darkened pigment prematurely. Let it come away naturally. Concerns that may be treated include freckles, sunspots, liver spots, seborrheic keratoses, birthmarks, and melasma.

Thermage radiofrequency treatment

Thermage is a radiofrequency treatment, not a laser or light-based treatment. Radiofrequency energy reaches deeper layers of skin without treating the upper layers in the same way as laser light. It is used to tighten and contour skin.

Thermage is noninvasive and is described as a single treatment without surgery or injections, with little to no downtime. A consultation can confirm current location availability, the area under consideration, and whether radiofrequency or a laser approach fits the concern.
