Skin Checks and Prevention
Check your skin regularly for new or changing moles and growths. A mole should be evaluated if it is larger than 6 millimeters, has an irregular or ragged border, or returns after a previous removal.
Sun protection can also reduce exposure to ultraviolet rays. Steps include:
- Using broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher
- Seeking shade
- Wearing protective clothing
When a Biopsy May Be Needed
A dermatologist can examine a concerning mole or growth and take a small tissue sample when needed. This procedure is called a biopsy.
The tissue is examined to determine whether it is cancerous. If skin cancer is found, the biopsy can help identify the type. Those findings guide the discussion about treatment options.
